Between March and October every year the town of
Lourdes in the French province of Midi-Pyrenees becomes a destination for
millions of pilgrims who are visit the holy city to take a bath and drink the
water of Lourdes. They come with a firm belief in their hearts that by doing
this they would be cured of the diseases and sufferings that has been ailing
them for such a long time. Their belief is further strengthened by the fact
that history is replete with such miracles that have take been witnessed since
the grotto was miraculously discovered in 1858.
People believe that Our Mother of Lourdes is the
Virgin Mary with whose blessings the miracles take place. It is believed that
anyone who comes to the city leaves with a gain of faith. People go to the city
with lot of prejudices but go back with their heart full of love for God. It is
believed that this is much more important than the physical cure that takes
place. Thousands of people have been benefitted by the Miracle of the water of
Lourdes and sixty eight them have been officially approved as miracles after
the stringent process of recognizing miracles has been undertake. The first
miracle was recognized in 1862 with the last such approval was recognized in
2012. To verify the veracity of the cure a Medical bureau has been operational
in Lourdes since 1882 which has among its members believers as well as
non-believers who examine each case and decide whether the person has been
cured or not.
A priest who was suffering from a suffering from a
nervous disorder after contracting influenza came to Lourdes with the hope that
his condition would improve. When he came there he needed help for everything
that he did, was unable to walk, used to be confused, was unable to speak
properly and had loss of memory. All symptoms pointed towards nervous disorder
from spinal cord and brain. After reaching there he went for a bath only after
two days as he did not want to take the place of a sick pilgrim who sought cure.
After taking bath at the grotto he realized that he did not need his walking
stick and had been completely cured. The cure was permanent and he was able to
perform his duties as a Parish for another 14 years. The cure was attributed to
a supernatural cause which could be done only with the blessings of the All
Mighty God.
