WATER OF LOURDES – THE LIVING WATER

Lourdes is a small town in the Midi-Pyrenees region of France and is visited by thousands of pilgrims all around the world who visit this town with hope and devotion that their diseases and sickness would be cured by the miraculous water of Lourdes. The Church has never encouraged the devotees to visit Lourdes yet the faith in Our Lady of Lourdes has grown over the years and more than three hundred thousand people have been visiting here every year.
Lourdes water or the living water as it is called emanates from a spring in the Grotto of Massabielle, which was discovered in 1858. An analysis of water in 1858 found that water was potable and oxygen, nitrogen, carbonic acid, alkaline carbonate or silica, carbonates of lime and magnesia, carbonate of iron and many other chemicals.
As word spread about the miraculous powers of the water of the spring many people started to visit the place to bathe or drink the water and went back cured from illness and disease that they had been suffering from a very long time. It is common to see these days to watch people patiently waiting near the grotto to have a dip in the baths or take a drink from the spring.
The water that comes out of the spring is not heated but has a temperature of 12o C. One is immersed in the water for about a minute during which time prayers are recited and the bather is encouraged to venerate the statue of the Virgin. The able bodied men are helped by a volunteer or two while the immobile require much more help.
In 1878 a lady who was suffering from a gangrene ulcer in her right leg. The ulcer had covered two thirds of her long and was very deep, making it in a very serious condition. Moreover treatment for over 10 years had not borne result. She took her first bath on the next day of her arrival and after the second bath the ulcer had disappeared. People were amazed to see that the tendons had become normal and the skin was not only new but rose-colored too. The third bath restored her leg to normal position. This was nothing short of a miracle and the lady lived healthily for the next 30 years. In 1908 the cure of the ulcer was regarded as a miracle and attributed to “The Lady of Lourdes”
